Male being mean to my other geckos!

lillesspetz Jul 07, 2005 11:41 AM

I tried putting him with my girls, Just to see how they would react. The male started rattling his tail then he went mad!

He bit my biggest girl and started shaking his head like he's trying to rip her skin off. The female is acting like nothing is going on.

Then he let go and she just crawled away but this time he bit her tail and shook his head.

I had to tapper hid head with my finger to make him let go and put him back in his own cage.

QUESTION: is this his method of showing he wants to breeding, or he's just being evil?

Male breeding response. Not much you can do except seperate them and not breed!

Not interested in breeding. I don't want to be like the girl in this town who breeds for the fun of it. Kinda messed up. Plus if I wanted to breed. I would have a better set up and all the equipment and will be sure that the babies will have a home.

But I'm low on funds so buying all the breeding stuff is too much for me right now.

Just want to give them some interaction, cause he's on his own and crickets seems to boring to him.

The breeding response scares me.

Are there any breeders out there that lost a tail or some skin from males like mine?

Try feeding him mealworms if he's bored with cricket but just make sure that he doesn't eat so much that he throws them back up. My male got bored with crickets too so I switched him over to mealies and he won't touch a cricket now. I've never had a problem with my male being mean to my females since he's a perfect gentleman but I do have the problem of one of my females being mean to my male. My female bit the crap out of my males tail, left a mark on it and everything until his next shed but he never lost his tail, so there's a good chance that your female might not lose her tail depending on how bad the bite happens to be.

Careful! Believe it or not, leopard geckos can easily be as prolific as bunny rabbits and hamsters when allowed to "interact"...and we all know what happens with rodents! Plus the females can store sperm -- I think for up to 14 months or so...

And yep, mating is fairly violent (from our perspective, i guess?)

So one 30 minute "romp with the ladies" could mean lots of eggs!

Maybe try getting him out more and letting him run around if you're concerned? Mine can spend hours exploring towels and clothing that are crumpled up to make lots of nooks and crannies.

He wasn't in with the girls for long, like maybe 10 minutes.

Right when he got in he rattled his tail and bit the girl. I freaked and tapped his head for a while til he let go and grabbed him, but not fast enough cause he bit on to her tail.

But yeah. Great idea on letting him romp in clothes and towels! I'm gonna do that but in like a kiddy pool. I don't want him to disappear under the couch or something.
