Small insects found in the vivarium.

Omi-san Jul 07, 2005 04:43 PM

As I was feeding my Python today, I noticed 2 small insects moving on the paper towels. They were beige/yellow and about 1/16 long. I killed them and searched for more and found nothing.

Maybe they came from the rat pinky. Or from outside the vivarum.

They didnt look like mites or thicks. Should I worry about this?

I noticed 2 small insects moving on the paper towels. They were beige/yellow and about 1/16 long.

There are over 300,000 species of beetle, 100,000 species of butterfly, 100,000 species of fly, 100,000 species of ants and wasps, etc. for a total easily exceeding 1,000,000 species of insect.
Trying to ID the insect based on it being yellow and 1/16 of an inch isn't going to be easy! Of course, then there are mites, ticks, etc which aren't even insects.

Look at some books and see if you can narrow down what type of "insect" it might have been so we might be able to help.

I can say that snake mites are much smaller than that and are black. Ticks come in a variety of colors, but you don't often find them loose in the cage.

I just wanted to know if it was a parasite attacking pet snakes other than mites and thick.

Identifying insects species on description can be daunting task, but start with the number of legs, body segments if any, and winged or not winged, then look for appendages or unusual markings colors, better yet just take a picture.
