In projected path of Hurricane Dennis.......long....

rdperry5 Jul 08, 2005 02:46 AM

We are in the Florida Panhandle. Hurricane Dennis is projected to land here as a category 3 hurricane. This area is still recovering from Ivan (cat. 3) last September. People are SCARED and almost panicking.

We are trying to secure a rental car to evacuate (the vehicles we own won't make it out of town). There are 5 people in our family, as well as 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 hamsters, 2 bearded dragons, 2 corn snakes, and 16 EGGS (layed only a week ago) in the homemade incubator. Having that many pets makes evacuating very difficult. Last year during Ivan my husband stayed at the house to take care of the animals while he sent me and the kids to my sister's house (more inland and brick).

My husband says we will have to leave the snakes here in their den (I would rather not). I am not sure what to do about the eggs. The area may be without power for several days.

Any supportive ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Deanna

Hi, taking the snakes along should be fairly simple. You can put them in pillowcases and then in a box. Just dont tell the hotel or whereever you are staying what is in there. Put them in the pillowcases and fold over the opening and secure it with a rubberband and they should be all set. As for the eggs I would leave them alone. They are probably better off sitting still in a storm than being transported all over the place.

Stay safe,

Carole

What about keeping the eggs from getting too hot?

It will get very hot in here without electricity. If we evacuate, we might not be able to get back for a few days. I have been keeping the eggs between 78 and 79F.

Hmm category 3? Last I checked it was verging on becoming a category 5, but I guess cuba will probably weaken it. Well you're best bet is to find a well insulated place where the temperatures won't very much... I don't think taking the eggs with would be a good idea...hmm I'm really not sure. Good luck!

Well she said that yes, but she also said Dennis was projected to make landfall as a cat. 3, which i believe now since cuba weakend it so much. It's a cat. 2 right now but it will most certainly intensify.

If I lived in the path of a hurricane, I'd prepare my house, find a safe place to put everything (the strongest part of the house), hook up a generator, and camp out in that room until the storm passed. Actually honestly i'd probably be shooting pictues out the front door if the conditions weren't like cat. 4-5 lol. But if you guys plan on leaving, I change what I last said, bathtubs tend to survive these things right? I mean if your house goes down, god forbid, I'd want to be in the bath tub. If i couldnt bring an animal, thats where i would put it, and I'd take extra precautionary matters as well. So if you have to leave your eggs, i'd set the incubation device on styrophome, surrounded by stryophome, anything to insulate it. If you must leave the snakes too, i'd put them in containers in the bathtub. That's just me though, and I've never had to go through such an event. If i could send hte hurricane here instead, I would, we really need rain.
