cage plans

zillamonster Jul 08, 2005 11:08 AM

i'm sorry, i'm sure there are other threads on here somewhere on this topic but the search feature of this site is seriously hard to find relevant results.

i'm trying to find some cage plans for an adult iguana. he's been in a large enclosure (6 x 4 x 4) made mostly of PVC and plexiglass for about 3 years but he's getting too big for it now so i want something bigger and probably made of wood with plexiglass windows. any pictures or plans or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Hi Zillamonster.
I found wonderful blueprints for an iguana habitat in the book "Green Iguana the Ultimate Owners Manual" by James Hatfield. He's also included some great details on building the enclosure, and in the back of the book are a couple of color photographs of it.
We're in the process of getting ours built now. Getting all the materials can seem a little pricey, but I truly believe it's well worth it if it means a happy, healthy iggy!
Hope this helps...

My husband is quite handy and built these two enclosures
for me.

The first picture is dark but you can get an idea. It is
made from oak wood and tempered glass for the doors and
half back (this allows her to see out her window behind the
cage.)

The second enclosure is made of plywood and plexiglass
for the doors and half back (this allows him to look out
the window behind his cage as well)

Hope this helps
Linda

Check out the book on Terrarium, by Barlett. Excellent book, lots of ideas.

A good overall dimension for a large iguana is 7 feet long, 4 feet deep, 7 feet tall.
Think of yourself living in a walk-in closet. Think of how much room you'd like to move around, poop, eat, and bask. Apply it to the animal.

Oh, and don't make the enclosure 'sterile' with nothing visually stimulant. Keep it creative, and appealing to the animal.

I had an 8x8x8. It was incredible!
