How do you setup a enclosure for a baby IJC python.

stkkts Jul 15, 2003 12:09 PM

How do you set up an enclosure for a 1 year or younger IJC python? I know people say small, something that wouldbe intimidate the animal. I have a 10 gallon tank, is that good? also how would you set up light and heat? day light, night light heat pad? how would you do it? Also, what type of substrate? I was thinking newspaper, or magazine paper. Is that good?thanks in advance.

Personally I would avoid aquariums like the plague as many reptiles have stress related problems, and they dont hold heat well at all. I like to use rubbermaid, or sterilite tubs in a rack. This helps them with security issues and usually allows them to feed well. I leave them in this sweaterbox sized box for up to a year. I then move them into an appropriate sized cage. I build my own cages, mostly out of Styrene enclosed is a pick. If you would wrather buy then look and leave the pros to building the best enclosure for your snake, I would go to Boaphile, Vision, Precision etc.

Well if you are going to use a 10 gallon I would use a heat pad (appropriate size) for night time and maybe a very low wattage bulb (25watts) and the heat pad for the day. Make sure you get a digital thermometer with a probe so you can measure temps and adjust from there. Newspaper would be fine, I wouldn't use magazine print though. A hide box and a humidity hide would be needed for in a tank due to humidity issues. A watter bowl and something to climb on and your set.
