New Mex vs MEX Milk differences?

Ritas Jul 08, 2005 01:58 PM

Hi
From what I understand from seeing pics, reading as a whole the New Mex Milks have more color than the Mex Milks and New Mex milks seem a bit harder to get to eat pinkies than Mex milks?
I am interested in this group of snakes since love the colors and that males average 3 feet any input.comments would be great.
Thank you
Rita

These are my favorite milksnakes. You can't go wrong. They don't need much, thrive in a 2ft cage, and are just darn easy. And 3ft for a male is a good sized one. Many males of either species are not even that.

The nice thing about these milks is that despite their small size they are great mouse feeders. Yeah, the New Mexico milks may require lizard scenting at first, but they are still extremely hardy snakes.

The two intergrade where their ranges meet. Classic New Mexico milks are rather small and usually a little more brightly colored as adults but not always. Classic Mexican milks are kind of stocky as adults and more robust in size. Both are tame as adults when compared to most other milksnakes. Very squirmy as babies though, but that passes after a year or so or even alot sooner with some individuals.

Thank you. I am going to go with the New Mex milk. I looked into these snakes because find them great looking and didnt want a snake that was to big. They dont seem to popular.
I have a 20 gallon long tank so good to hear that enough. I dont see many or any for sale I imagine they will be available Aug/Sept after eggs hatch.
Thanks
Rita

The problem I have with the NM milksnakes is that they are so variable throughout their range. Snakes from areas around Albuquerque are very different than snakes from western Texas.

Many NM milksnakes in captivity actually come from west Texas, particularly the Davis Mts and the River Road. Most of the Davis Mountain snakes are very annulata like in my experience. The river road snakes are smaller and paler, but very pretty.

The same is true for annulata. Most annulata in captivity probably originate from one of two roads near the town of Freer. Some populations neared the coast are smaller and show LA milksnake intergradation (and aren't as pretty). For really nice annulata, you have to get further southwest (the ones in north eastern Mexico are really nice!).

Here's a female from near Hebbronville, TX.

Does anyone else here think that these scrolling signature lines are stupid?

Hey Chris,
Did you ever get any offspring from those annulatas you found??
Nathan

Here is a nice but unfortunate (DOR) one I found on 2050, 4/8/05

Thats a great looking snake did you keep her ? I plan to get a captive bred . I dont breed so just wanted smaller snake but with color and this seemed like the best choice. Tho you dont see them for sale as much as other milks.
