Ooouchhh! Nasty blood python bite

5rings Jul 08, 2005 09:33 PM

Well, I got my feelings and my hand hurt tonight. Princess Buttercup, my favorite blood python, bit me. I've been bitten before but this is the worst yet. I reached into her cage and lifted her hide box and she nailed my fingers before I even lifted the box a single inch. She chomped down and held on. I jerked my hand back and drug a 15lb snake half way out of her cage before she let go. Actually she didnt let go my skin just tore. The tip of my ring finger is actually split on half. I snapped this picture early but I really started bleeding after this and dripped blood all over my snake room floor. It hurt, alot.

First off there were kids running around. Secondly it was after sunset. Thirdly she is hungry, as I havent fed her for two weeks. I have fed her every 7 days since I got her, except last week. She's too fat! Thirdly a neighbor was standing beside me and I think she sensed him rather than me. Finally I think I scared her. Usually I talk to my snakes before I reach into their cages. That way they know what I am up to and they know its me. I have handled this snake hundreds of times. My kids handle this snake. She has been to schools as a show-and-tell. Even grade school kids have handled her. All I can say is it was my fault. I should know better. It still hurts though, both my feelings and my hand.

By the way, my wife was laughing because I told her to snap a picture before I tended to my hand. My neighbor was mortified. I must be warped, I thought it was cool.

Well it looks.like a good one.Makes others think bloods are man eaters, but any snake has a potential of biting at anytime. So how big were teeth, I've only been biten by the little guys and hopefully not the big ones.Looks like you better go get your rabies shots.Hey lets see a pic after all the blood is gone, just curious.Thank god it wasn't your kids or someone elses kid, I know my wife would make me get rid of all if my little girl got bit. Thanks for sharing your almost death experience, lol. Later, Ethan

You are right. I dont want people to get the wrong idea. In the same circumstances any snake might have bitten me. I certainly trust this girl as much as I would any ball python or kingsnake and far more than I would a retic or tree anything.

I had a friend email me pics of his hand last week after his 12' Burm hit him and coiled. The snakes stayed on him until somebody came to pry it off. He's got 700 snakes and said just what I am saying now. They all bite if the situation warrants it. He blamed himself and I am too. Buttercup is a lover not a fighter, she was unknowingly provoked.

Lesson learned

thats one reason i dont gie my bloods hides. they can dig into the substrate if they want to hide and it protects me from startling them and getting bit.
