Dumeril's boa as beginner snake?

Gpoop Jul 08, 2005 10:10 PM

I was thinking about getting my first snake. I have a bearded dragon, russain and refoot tortoises but I want a snake. Would a Dumeril's boa make a good first snake? I was thinking about a ball python but the feeding issues they have is putting me off. And the red tails get to big for me. I don't think I could handle a 8-10 snake. Also kings, corns and milks don't interest me at all.

They are very low maintenance compared to True Redtails. Also, they do not appear to relish heat as South American boas do. 78-88 day, 72-80 night.. 30-50 percent humidity. Their husbandry reminds me a bit of Argentine boas. Very hardy if you get a decent animal to begin with... ie., buy a "guaranteed feeder". Since they can have a strong feeding response, start with a younger boa so that you can develope a pet/owner relationship. This would give you time learn behavior of a Dumerils before they become a moderate sized adult, 6-8 feet. They are not aggresive and tame easily. If a smaller boa appeals to you, get a male.. usually do not excede 6-7. All around solid boa, I enjoy them very much. Way underrated within todays commonly kept boas.

If you like Boa constrictor ssp. but do not like the size issue, go with a Central American or Insular locale of BCI. Especially males, they typically don't reach over 4.5 ft. (Males). Mine seem to be quite content at 3.5 ft.

Are Central American boa's non-aggressive like the red tails?

When handled even at a minimum they are. Buy CBB from a U.S. breeder. Babies can be nippy, but I have never had a problem with any of my C.A.
