Honduran Milk Egg bound and still producing!

fantasy Jul 15, 2003 12:46 PM

This is for all of you who think that just because a snake gets egg bound doesn't mean its over. Last year I had a Double Het Ghost female lay 8 good eggs and one was eggbound. I took her to the local vet to have surgery on removing the egg. The surgery went well and she healed nicely. Well, I wasn't sure if she would still produce and ovulate. This year I got 10 good fertile eggs from her and every single one came out smoothly on thier own!!!! I also, have a friend who had a corn get 12 eggs bound inside of her. he had the same operation done this year and all the eggs were romoved and she is doing great! can't wait to see next year if she does well.

glad to hear it, Matt. I've had that happen a number of times. Most recent example is a hypo female operated on last year, laid ten eggs this season, at least nine of them are good, due to hatch in the next week or so.

My vet thinks the animals have a survival method that prompts them to use (usually) the oviduct NOT cut previously, since the surgery can result in scarring & loss of tissue that could obstruct subsequent successful egg production from the oviduct operated on. I had one female this year, that had been operated on previously, that got eggbound again and surgery revealed it had happened in the same oviduct that got jammed last year.

I think a lot of our good fortune has to do with having good vets, too. But the bottom line is, no one should give up on a female that's had to have surgery to remove eggs.

My female that was operated on this year had complications, unfortunately, and the oviduct tore a bit. She's healing nicely, but I was advised not to attempt breeding again, just in case the eggs try to move down the torn oviduct.
