JCP making strange noises

Weekendherper Jul 08, 2005 10:55 PM

Went to check on the snakes tonight and I heard the strangest sounds coming from my adult JCP I purchased a few weeks back. He ate 2 small/meduim rats 4 days ago. Tonight I heard what I thought was a precursor to a large poop, but turned out to be more of a grumbling tummy sound. It was LOUD! It was very hard to tell if the grumbling sound was coming from the stomach or his mouth, but his mouth was not open when he made these noises. A few minutes later he opened his mouth and loudly expelled what could only be described as a burp. This went on with some loud grumbling and then a burp 3 or 4 more times. He seems fine now, but I've never heard this before from any snake. His temps are 81 cool, 86 warm side with a 3-4 degree drop at night and about 45% humidity.

Has anyone else heard anything like this?

Any input would be appreciated.

No, I haven't. But - how do you thaw your rats? If you leave them out overnight, gas builds up as the innards decompose. This could be why your snake is laking table manners and etiquette

The larger snakes in my collection (6’and over) release gas which can be audible from the next room. Note: I usually blame them if I no one else is closer.

This release of gas is most often heard during feeding or shortly there after. It also happens about 3 to 4 days later during defecation.

Large snakes with fast metabolisms like indigos and cribos release audible gas with some regularity. Lets me know everything is working okay.

The other person who posted his commit about thawing I believe has a good point. I never thaw over night. Thaw with haste and feed.

Good Luck…..Dann

If you see liquid/ fluids from the nose or mouth while making your observations you may have a more serious condition. Bubbles from the nose or mouth may indicate respiratory problems and not gastrointestinal functions. If this is the case seek out your Herp vet ASAP.

Better safe than sorry.

Good Luck…Dann

No bubbles or liquid was coming out. He seems fine today but I will keep a close eye on him. It was just startling to hear it. I'd never heard anything like it before.

I had a BCI years ago that used to make the most fantastic gas in the planet.

She'd gas up about 3 days after feeding everytime!
