Those darn eye caps.................

diggy415 Jul 09, 2005 12:04 AM

I rescued a ball python who looks like it has layers of old eye caps, I soaked with shed ease in a container of little water for 20min 3 days a week and hoping for a better shed this next time. Anything anyone can tell me that might help it if it doesn't come off this next time??

When the snake clears and is ready to shed, soak it for up to 48 hours. Also scotch tape pressed on the eye will remove eye caps.Terry

AHHHHHHHHH. Do not press scotch tape to the eye!

Gently pull scotch tape from the front to the back across the eye cap, do not press it to the eye cap...if you press it to the eye and make firm contact you will remove scales, old eye caps, perhaps the current eye cap, maybe the eye. Do not underestimate the stickiness of scotch tape to your snake! First wait till it sheds and look at the shed. Did an eye cap come off in the shed? If yes, do not try to remove anything as there is nothing to be removed, sometimes it looks like there are eye caps there when really there aren't.

The one time i actually had to do this...i went ahead and stuck the tape to my hand a few times before applying it to the snake. To reduce the level of "stickyness" that the tape had.(Just in case)

I agree with less stickness on tape. Last time i had this problem i simply soaked for several minute each day for a week. Looks like alot of bad sheds as with these soakings the neck skin is being removed where i didn't think there would be any. Many layers of bad shed here. Between soaking and keeping humidity up it should turn out fine I hope. Tonight is feeding night.

i agree with rwoodyer only use this technique as a last resort, you dont want to injure the python, so make sure you check the shed for eyecaps. bathing any reptile for 48 hours is too long unless you can maintain a good temp , you dont want respiratory problems aswell a shedding problems.

Yes, 80% Vaseline mixed with 20% Mineral oil. Apply daily on the eyes until the old caps come off. Guaranteed to work, just be patient.

Hope this helps,

Rob Reiding.
