well ok first off, heres the link to the site.. and most of you should have already herd of Daniel Bennet, hes a big name in monitors, and for copyright this is all his!! but i dont think all of you re going to agree with this, but then again no one ever does in this fourm!! his a copy of that im talking about........................................................... To tame a monitor lizard it should be handled regularly. Wash your hands to remove all scents that might be interpreted as edible and hold the monitor firmly. It will struggle at first, but should eventually settle down. Some monitors enjoy being scratched gently; under the chin, above the eyes, and particularly behind the ear. They almost seem to show their pleasure by closing the eyes and breathing deeply. After a while one gets used to a particular monitor's erogenous zones and the taming process becomes easier. There is a sensation associated with tickling an enormous water monitor under the chin that is difficult to describe! If they do get annoyed they will usually give ample warning by hissing and inflating the throat before resorting to violence. In this case, leave them for a day and try again. Never handle a monitor while it is digesting large meals and never attempt to tame large animals unaccustomed to people. The more they are handled as youngsters, the tamer they will be as adults, but it is important to continue to handle the monitor regularly throughout its life, lest it forgets. Very large monitor lizards have the potential to inflict horrendous injuries and they should always be treated with caution. All monitors react to smell, and approaching a large male whilst bearing the scent of a rival could give you more than you bargained for.

Daniel has the right to say(write) what he wants. I know him, hes been to my house several times and we have been in the bush together.

Let me tell you, hes a great fella and very good in the bush. With that in mind, hes horrible with captives and doesn't know which end to offer the mouse too.(over dramatic) but you get the point.

I know him, so I take into consideration, his lack of captive experience(almost none of any kind)(absolutely no successful experience)

There is far worse information being put out by folks who think they are monitor experts, some are field biologists. They, like Daniel, cannot get a handle on captives, so they say captives are "different" then wild ones. The point is, with wild monitors, they only watch, they do not have to "do" or "understand" anything, so, they can say anything they like. In captivity, your either right(successful) or wrong(unsuccessful). The animals are the result of your understanding and that result is clear.

So, If I were you, I would keep in mind the authors personal experience and take their information accordingly.

Its a good sign that you actually questioned something thats written, because a fair share of whats written is total huey. That includes all subjects, muchless monitors. Monitors are particularly prone to poor information. Good luck FR

FR Jul 15, 2005 07:38 AM

I think the term was coined after the cartoon charactor, Baby Huey, in reference to the spruce goose. FR

Now that IS a lot of HOOEY!!!!

you're killin' me here!!! Baby H.

FR Jul 17, 2005 09:11 AM

Hooey means, nonsenseical, without meaning.

Huey means a huge pile of elephant dung. When the elephant has a digestive problem.

Your meaning does not fit. As its too nice, my huey is much more accurate.

By the way sir, What does your H stand for. I wonder if thats why your so sensitive about hooey, I mean huey. FR
