Hi All,
Do any of you use water dishes in with your uros, or do you rely on misting? If you use dishes, have you seen your uros actually drinking from them?
Best...
Jim

I have never used a water dish for any of the geckos that I own, uroplatus and rhacodactylus. They are not needed. The geckos get their hydration from misting.

mine (especially lineatus) drink from the water side of the tank when their thirsty but all my geckos defecate in the water like crazy so the water side wont be in their next setup. I heard somewhere in the wild they do that so their scent can't be picked up? plus a lot of the crickets die in it lol. I'd rather just mist the tank.

I use a large hard plastic lid you would find on a LARGE jar of peanut butter, its low but sturdy.
I see them drink quite often, all 3 use it. You would be surprised , they just stand in it, front feet and drink.
I mist their tank , day and night. But do not ever worry about them getting enough water.
I will catch a pic one night and show you how they drink

The large lid sounds like a good idea as I have had similiar experiences with deeper containers only to have crickets and roaches end up drowning. I believe the prey items can escape from a peanut butter lid, lol! I'll give it a try tonite and see if they use it although it may take a few nights before they use it.

I like using water dishes because it comforts me knowing that they have some water there if they need it. I have seen my henkels drink out of the water bowl so I know that they use it. To help the problem of the crickets drowning I just set a few rocks in the water so then they can use the rocks to climb out.

I use water bowls in with my larger uroplatus. My male lineatus use them. And all of my fimbriatus use them. one pair of ebanaui does use it occassionally but thats about it.
I prefer leaving on in there to be on the safe side as you never know when they get smart and discover standing water is good for drinking. I know its not best to say they are dumb like that but its true, they don't usually have concept of standing water.
Also, if they don't drink from it, they pery does to some degree and thats where it counts most.
I am setting up a practice mister tonight in my female lineatus cages. Hopefully it will work out. If it does, I'll be setting up a few more on well controlled timers.

Timed misting systems are the way to go... Nothing quite like them and they reduce need for showers dramatically.

yeah, i use water bowls in every tank. but i make them easily accessable to me just incase they do make a mess in them. i also try to put the bowl in a position where its not likely to get crapped in cuz it s a natural instinct for all animals to deficate in the water, including us( you know,"i wont swim in your toilet so dont pee in my pool). its the most sanitary thing for any animal to do(in the wild anyway, but they dont know theyre not in the wild). i wouldnt use the water bowls if i didnt see them drinking from them every morning. i have a couple pics of my wild caught henkels and mossies drinking from them. but honestly the leaftails probably dont need to drink or even be sprayed at all as long as their humidity is kept real high. they would get enough moisture from their food. they re almost like dart frogs with their humidity needs. they have real thin skin and lose all of their moisture from their skin. but i just like to keep water bowls in just as insurance.
In the wild, they get there water from dew drops and from the food they eat. No two ways around it otherwise they wouldn't drink when I spray them.

i use water bowls now and then, but not really all the time. i mostly use them if anyone looks dehydrated, if theres a newcomer, or if im going out of town and relying on someone else to make sprays. but when its just me around, i just spray them. i know how much it takes to get them hydrated for the night. and my henks used to dabble in their water fountain time to time, but due to crickets always sneaking in thats another thing i only use time to time.
