I got a call this morning from our county police dispatch. They said they had a car repair shop with a copperhead under the hood of a car they were working on. I gave them a call, and the mechanic swears it's a copperhead, cause someone there "knows all about snakes" (Yeah right, I thought, how many times have we all heard that). Since it was not near any copperhead habitat, and was actually in a pretty well populated suburb of Allentown, PA, I told him it was probably a milk snake, but I'd go out there and check it out.
I ate my words when I looked at the snake. Darn if it wasn't a copperhead. Just goes to show, never assume.
I'll release this beauty in the mountains north of here this week. Looks like she may be a gravid female. At least they didn't kill her. Sometimes I actually get a glimmer of hope that people are becoming more enlightned!
