Holding Snappers by the Tail

iturnrocks Jul 09, 2005 10:55 AM

Since at least 1 person in this group got really upset about me telling him not to hold snapping turtles by the tail, I was curious how the rest of the group feels.

Im specifically talking about common snapping turtles over 5 inches long (shell length).

It is my understanding that holding a common snapping turtle by the tail will cause some kind of spinal injuries. Whenever I hold a snapping turtle, I always support it with my hand on the bottom of the shell.

In my opinion large wild common snappers are more dangerous and harder to pick up or move off the road than it would be to pick up an alli snapper of any size. if i'm trying to get it out of harms way i'd drag it by the base of the tail. if i had a large pet that was vicious i'd probably not lift it too much at all because lifting by the tail might injure them. if it were tame that would be a different story. they have so much range with that long neck that they're best left alone unless you're ready to be clawed or repeatenly bitten.

I've held big snappers by grabbing one of their hind legs and just holding them away from you, works fine.
