garter snakes in southern virginia northern north carolina?

i want to find a wild garter snake just for somthing to do.im not going to keep.where would i look for them?would they be in my area?do they all have the stripe down there backs?

they should be in your area.. Well of course they are lol.. look mainly in the morning and evening on roads and lifing objects like tin, boards.. and around abandoded buildings. but i find all my garters in winter and spring barely ever in the summer..

How far south in VA? In the county I live in I've only ever seen one color variation, but they're a real pretty green. Gopher (there's a pic of her up in the gallery thing) was found in VA (Rockingham County)that's a good 6 hours from the NC border. And less that 3 from DC, so they can vary a lot from here to there. I don't know if my comment helps any...I always used to find garters when we mowed the lawn...
