jonellopez Jul 09, 2005 02:49 PM

Hehe.

Hey Guys

Here's the scenario. Saw my first thayeri hatchling for the year out with some orange and grey heads poking out last midnight when I got home. Woke up this morning to go to work...same thing. Now I'm at work and I'm so excited that I'm itchin' to get home. LOL. 64 days in 80-82 F and they're coming out! my females also layed their second clutches this week those will be due September. With another clutch hatching this coming week please excuse my bursts of utter excitement. Woohoo! Watch out for pics soon!

Terrific news Jonel and believe me, I know the feelin'...

My first clutch of the year to hatch, thayeri, began pipping sometime after midnight as well with a few more to go.

FYI... 80-82F and 63 days for mine here, pretty darn close!

Congrats my friend, I know there will be some really nice babies in those clutches of yours!

vichris Jul 09, 2005 11:44 PM

Congrats to both of you, Mike and Jonel. I hope you guys produce some real screamers. Keep us all posted.
Personally, I'm stocking up on herion for when mine hatch out. I still have a little over 4 weeks before my thayeri are ready to hatch.
My first clutch of cal kings are all piping right now and one is out of the egg. I've also got a veiled chameleon who's in the process of laying eggs as I write this.

mexicanamak Jul 10, 2005 10:40 AM

...I certainly hope for a special one or two myself. There probably won't be any of the intensely saturated, dramatic colored offspring from this bunch but there should be some nice ones considering what the father is made of. Now that I look again, hatchling #2 is out and I'm getting a little stoked... super nice gray leonis model with near perfect narrow red saddles, a nuchal that rivals my '04 white Vermilya male and the dove gray head pattern of it's father with greeri-like markings...

Oooooooooohhhhhhhhh.... 6 more to go and maybe the best yet to come?!! Great stuff.

Veiled chameleons eh?!!! Now that's pretty cool stuff right there! CONGRATS ON THAT ONE! How is she doing now? How are the eggs?

Mike

I sure hope you get a melanistic male like you are hoping for. I can't wait to see some pics.

BTW the Veiled Chameleon is still in her nest box laying eggs. I can see several eggs but I don't want to disturb her till she covers them up and gets out of the nest box. I'll keep you posted.

Congrats Mike...You gotta share some pics...It is only fair you know....LOL
Keep us posted....can't wait to see what you get over there.

...and you gotta know I'm itchin' to get my first thayeri clutch pic! Rest assured, as soon as it can happen I will certainly share. So far only one has emerged with 5 more pipped and 2 others lagging behind.

Going to be an interesting clutch with the female being melanistic and the male a high white leonis, both ends of the spectrum. Wonder what the mix will turn out to be?!! I expect quite average looking babies and if one turns out as nice as pops I will be very surprised but... that's what thayeri are all about... THE BIG SURPRISE!!!

jonellopez Jul 10, 2005 10:37 AM

Hi Mike

Melanistic bred to a high white leonis? Nice! Defintely take some pics of the big surprise. How did the first one look? Any of the 5 that pipped melanistic like mom? Let us know how it turns out. Take care.

Hey Jonel...

Not your ordinary pairing, but happened due to this pair being the only thayeri I had ready. May turn out to be worthwhile though, so far the first was a "standard" white milksnake with dark head and the second and more exciting... a really nice gray leonis speedster with clean narrow red saddles, great nuchal and dove gray head of it's father. Sounds bland, but sure is a racy looking combination! Surprised at how nice his markings are.

All but 1 have pipped now, several dark noses but not enough out to see if any are melanistic. Hoping for at least one melanistic male?!! Maybe know by this afternoon sometime.

Talk to ya lata. Here's the first-time '02 parents again.....

jonellopez Jul 10, 2005 03:53 AM

Just got home and saw 3 hatchlings out of 8 eggs with some just poking out of the eggs. Looked in a box and said..."ooooh I see a possible keeper... wonder how it'll look after the first shed". I had to place them in their new home right away since their "grandma" just laid a 2nd clutch of 10 last night and I needed the incubation box. Stay tuned.

That lava orange one is awesome Jonel !!!!!!!
Hope it holds on to that color.
I take it that is the one you want to hold back, eh?
I would too ya know. They all look great so far.
Congratulations..........
I have some Splendida eggs that have hatched and some Brooksi eggs hatching as of right now. I am still waiting on the Thayeri eggs to hatch as well as some second clutches.
Certainly keep me/us posted Jonel.

Thanks John. I hope the color stays bright and clean also. If I base the end result to the parent's coloration. It's looking very optimistic. I'm not sure if it would be a definite hold back yet since I still have another clutch due this week and 2 2nd clutches in a few months. I haven't even seen the rest of the clutch! But it would definitely be a very good candidate. Don't we all wish we could just keep them all? Btw, Congrats on the Splendida and Brooksi. Take care.

Fantastic looking babies Jonel and I agree with John, that orange one appears completely saturated. As clean as the ground color on your babies tends to be, that one should be a winner without question!

And it sounds like you're kinda busy over there?!! lol!

I too was blinded by that nuclear orange baby.
I just can't comprehend why everyone else isn't crazy about these mexicanas. I have a variety of snakes in my collection and the mexicanas are the best temperment and handling snakes. Thayeri breeding has to be some of the most anticipated and exciting kingsnake projects around.
Best of luck,
Uncloudy

But how to proceed? Buy a bunch of snakes from one guy to save shipping? Buy several from a few to get genetic diversity?

Is genetic diversity available? Is it even desirable?

But most importantly, how am I going to 'splain this to my wife?

vichris Jul 11, 2005 11:21 PM

Mike,

Genetic diversity is important. Most breeders pick what they like from several breeders, and even then try to get some diversity from within those breeders. In the past some of us used to drool over the ads that Vivid Reptiles, and Serpents by Dan Vermilya ran in Vivarium, and Reptiles magazines. Today we (you) have alot more choices.

Here's some pics from three different breeder lines. The first one is from David Weymouth (Mountainkings.com)he's out of the buiness now. The second one is one I produced from a Vivid line male and a Robert Applegate female. And the third one is from Dan Vermilya.

Really nice looking animals. I look forward to seeing what you have to offer this year!
