Plant problem...

cammyleon Jul 10, 2005 11:06 AM

I have a ficus in my chameleons cage and it sheds the leaves so MUCH! My chameleon doesnt have much place to hide because the tree is pretty thinned out. I have had the hardest time trying to find the right plant to use, does anyone have any suggestions on what I should get? I would like to get something that is tall and bushy because the cage is 4' high. Thanks.

i know that ficus shed their leaves for an environmental reason...either too much or too little of sun, shade, water, etc. i'd do some research into what it takes to keep a particular plant alive before getting another one. maybe you can bring the ficus back too.

I use Scheffelera and Tea plants as they hardly shed any leaves and stay thick. I got mine at Lowes. Of course I repotted in clean soil and cleaned the leaves before putting in. But they are very nice and the Purple tea plants add a bit of color as well as great places to hide!

I use pothos vines and hang them from the top of the cage.
They hardly need any light, and will grow like crazy if the soil is kept moist all the time. They create good vines for
climbing on, you can wrap them around for pathways and they will eventually fill most of the cage. Ficus usually drop leaves when you first get them, then stabalize with alot less leaves. Some will aclimate to low light, some don't. They seem to need lots of light and water to grow bushy.

I've had my schefflera for about 3 months and its almost lost all its leaves! I got it from Home Depot. Do you water yours at all? I think that all my misting waters it enough, because before I woudl water it every once in a while and I would get tons of fruit flies which would mean the soil is plenty moist.

I was thinking that the basking light, temperature, and high humidity kills the scheffleras...any tips for keeping their leaves? It had tons of leaves when it started, and I think it is the best plant for a chameleon if you can keep it alive!
