performing own fecal tests... more

HerpGirl Jul 15, 2003 01:45 PM

i was paging thru my REPTILES magazines last night(well it was really like 3am..but whatever! ) and i came across an ad for midwest tongs. it said stuff about lab equipment and that if you perform your own fecal tests how it can save time and money, which made sense. since i have quite a large collection of herps and i am beggining my breeding projects soon i figured it would be a good investment but i dont really know how much it would initioally cost becuase they dont have the prices on there site. and i also am looking forward to going to college for exotic animal and herpetoculture veterinary once i get out of high school( sigh still got 4 years 2 go!) but if anyone has any idea where i could get the equipment for a resonable price it would be appreciated. thanks

I think that could be great if you could do that. However, first you would have to really study hard all the different types of things to look for and be able to recognize them. But then, even if you could identify things, how will you treat them? you would need a vet in order to get any form of worm treatments or whatever. So now your back to taking the fecal to the vets for them to verify it.

Just what came to my mind..but great if you can do it.

I am in the EXACT same position as you are. i checked at my local hospital to see if they would sell me a used microscope or even a stereoscope, but they wouldnt. new micros cost way too much for a freshman in college w/ 3 lizards, 2 cats and a dog. So if you find an alternative to buying brand new equipment- let me know!
Thanks and Good Luck
