I have caught only a handful of corns in AL. I can think of two, and then an additional few DOR's. The one that I do have now I caught back in 2000. He was crossing the road at 11:00 pm and was about 30". Now he has fathered his first clutch and is an absolute beauty. I have caught 5 corns this year already but they were all in east-central Mississippi. Here is a pic of my Bama male.

Awesome i have found 2 in alabama also and 3 in mississippi, 6 in georgia, 1 in north carolina, 4 in florida and 1 in south carolina i almost forgot about that one, all was adult except one.. since you live here do u see any eastern coachwhips i havent but i caught 2 in florida and im having a great year with eastern hogs and northern pines and this is my first year for them lol.. but they are just starting to show up and all...And speckled kings i caught 1 and 3 black kings one in huntsville.. and a 2 eastern milks at mentone if you know where that is...

mattbrock Jul 10, 2005 02:35 PM

I have not seen an eastern coachwhip in my lifetime. I've hunted all over the SE and as far as I can tell the dang things don't even exist...lol. Where did you catch the N. Pines? I have caught several eastern hogs this year and tons of speckled and black kings. Last time I counted my capture number for the year was 146. I hope to break 200 this year.

I dont find to many black kings or speckles catch me some! lol.. i caught my northern pines in Ider Alabama, i have seen quite a few, where did u find the eastern hogs? i have seen 4 in my whole life and would like to find some more, and kings i just dont see many.. just rat snakes, i dont even see alot of racers just black rats and midland water snakes and copperheads.. lol.. but not to many of the good stuff..

mattbrock Jul 10, 2005 02:54 PM

What county is Ider in? I forgot.

Let me see if I can even remember all the kings off the top of my head. We caught a 2.3 group in Acadia, LA including one gravid female that laid 12 great looking eggs. I have caught 4 speckled/black intergrades in Fayette, AL. I have also caught 4 in Oktibbeha, MS, and one awesome male in Sharkey, MS. I think that is it, I'll think of more if I sit here longer...lol.

The hoggies have come from Oktibbeha, MS. There are a lot of solid black ones, and an occasional flame orange or red phase. Also, a tan one every now and then.

I have seen no telling how many cottonmouths and copperheads, one pygmy rattler, and the canebrakes have eluded me this year. I haven't seen any live ones.

Snake_Master Jul 10, 2005 03:34 PM

Its in Dekalb county i caught a HUGE canebrake in North Carolina monday it had 11 rattlers and a button it was gigantic and 2 got hit while i was bush hogging i didnt see them... that was at my uncles some nice snakes there, and i caught a eastern kingsnake there... and some yellow rats.. Ive only herped once in mississippi i only found gray rats, miss. ringnecks, corn, cottonmouth, diamondback water, broadbanded and a miss. green water snake.. i herped in lousiana this year and caught a texas rat snake...which i thought was cool lol.. i herp in biloxi miss.. near the beach.. Do u have any pic of some snakes that you have caught that you could post? im working on pic of eastern kings, rats, and canebrake,,. i think my favorite snake i have ever caught was a everglades rat snake and southern hognose and eastern idigo which i release.. not to smart to keep one of them in florida lol.. it was about 7 foot.. maybe close to 8 and one eastern diamondback which was south alabama...

Awesome kings and that mud is awesome also thanks man for the pics.... I need to find me another speckled... but there rare here...

Mark Banczak Jul 10, 2005 06:45 PM

That Mud Snake is especially beautiful but that first Copperhead is also marvelous. I actually found several Speckleds right on Maxwell AFB in Montgomery. Thre were some ponds on base that had a wide variety of snake species so I would walk them regularly. It made for a nice way to spend a lunch hour.

As you know, I am just about 40 minutes north of you and I have only seen one corn this year (doa) and I didn't see any last year. Road cruising at night checking barns and "wild" areas that should have been perfect for corns, nothing. Black racers and black rats are pretty common but the eastern black kings have gone down in numbers, also.
Not really sure what the problem is. I know it isn't over collection bevause there isn't amyone around here even looking for them, much less catching them.

I have never found a corn snake in Alabama. All the people I know that have seen or caught them have found them in the Florida panhandle. I've looked in several places in South Alabama with no luck. Grey rats are EXTREMELY common down here though.

rick d Jul 11, 2005 10:24 PM

I've caught around 6 or so corns in south Montgomery co. road cruising. That's 6 in around 15 years of hunting or so. I think the problem is they are much more secretive than gray rats, spending alot of time in root systems and they don't seem to climb trees as much as other ratsnakes.

ErikH Jul 11, 2005 10:57 PM

I've seen quite a few corns in Alabama.Almost always road hunting though.Late April through May is the best time.Right at dusk to about a hour or so after dark usually, when temps are around 75-80F.On certain roads at the right time of year in the right conditions I've found as many as 5 in one night(not counting the DORs).I've never personally found one field collecting, but I was hunting with someone when they found one inside a rolled up piece of carpet.I found a gravid female once crossing the road at 3pm,in late May just after a shower, only one I've seen out in the open in the daytime.I still see alot of them, but here around Birmingham it is getting alot harder to see them alive anymore, way too many DORs.Each new home that gets built puts about 2 more cars on the road, and they just built 500 just down the road from my best corn hunting road.
