Health Question

MNTurtle Jul 10, 2005 01:15 PM

I've had my box turtle for nearly 20 years now and he seems to have developed a swollen tail/anus. He is still eating but doesn't seem to want to go into water unless I put him directly in his dish. I'm just wondering if he may be constipated or something? This is something that he hasn't ever developed before. Has anyone else noticed this with their turtles? Any insight for me??? Thanks!

Their are many different types of pathogens that would cause the symptoms described.

Bacterial and parasitic cloacal infections would account for vent inflammation, ulceration, encrustation, and swelling.

Blood tests and fecal smears would be prudent. It’s imperative that you get him to a good rep vet. as his ureteral flow may be compromised.

In the meantime; cloacal saline flushes and soaking in tepid water may prove effective for simple infections, along with keeping his living quarters extremely clean.
