crushed coral

Dewback Jul 10, 2005 03:48 PM

Has anyone used crushed coral or marine sand as a substrate? I would imagine it would be good for burrowing but maybe it would be too coarse? I have used it with diamond back terrapins and european ponds but not with the snapper. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Crushed coral would be way to course. If you have felt it before, it has sharp edges. Marine sand might be ok but is very pricey. I would just use playsand, cheap and looks good. Just be sure to clean it before you put it in your tank.

I use to have a collection of Leopard Geckos that I bred, but have sold them.

i was thinking the same thing(using crushed coral) after seeing the japanese website go go snapper, but these turtles consume too much of their gravel they are in. it may shred their intestines.

It has been a while since I have had a salt water tank. Back when I did have one, the crushed coral would act as a PH buffer. I would think besides the courseness of crushed coral it would make your turtles water way too alkaline, as we all know Snappers like acidic water!
Try the sands available, like play sand, masons sand or torpedo sand.
