New Ball Python and looking for cage suggestions

Melisssss Jul 10, 2005 04:20 PM

Right now he is in an old 10 gallon tank but would like a more permanent and escape-proof cage. Any suggestions? I am looking for heating, cage and all other suggestions, thanks!

Here is a suggestion or two or three..

Cage: Vision model 211, dimensions 24w x 22d x 14h

Heating: 5 1/2" dome w/ a ceramic heat emitter (Pearlco from The Bean Farm, either 30W or 60W depending on how warm the room is). You may also need floor heat if the room is cold. I use heat cable (ZooMed). Make some runs under the cage and tape it down with pieces of metal foil tape, but leave some areas with no heater so you can prop the cage up on styrene foam blocks.

Heat control: You can get away cheap and use dimmers if you don't want to spend alot, one for each heater.

Precision cages www.precisioncaging.com makes some nice sizes, but the Vision cage above is just about the perfect size, not too big and not too small.

Here's a question for you...

I have a Tex Rex Cobra mat for a 10-20 gallon cage that will be just sitting around. Do you think that would create enough floor heat for the Vision cage? Room temps here are about 71-68 degrees year round.

Thanks for the suggestions! I was looking at Vision but unsure of the sizes.

If you also use an overhead heater as described, then you can put the heat pad on the bottom under the cage but not directly under the beam of heat from above.

The thing I like about heat cable is that you can make a wider area of heated floor with less chance of overheating because you space the runs of cable by about 2-3 inches from one another. Since adult BPs are larger than a heat pad for a 10gal tank, it makes sense to have a little bit larger area heated in the cage. Try your heat pad first, then get something else if needed.

Mark,

I followed your advise yesterday and got the Vision 221 which was slightly longer(4" and got the heat emitter and dome. I'll give the heat pad a try and see hwo it goes as I have hit the ceiling of my budget very quickly.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond!
