Black rat genetics question...

phiber_optikx Jul 10, 2005 11:48 PM

just a question about an observation i've noticed... Albino black rats. The ones I have seen in the classifieds are a redish brown even as babies you can see it... but the ones I am getting from doorgunner look almost like a candycane corn.... do they ALL look like this as newborns or are there more than one kinds of albinism in black rats? like maybe one is albino and one is amel...? also if there are different kinds, what are the prices for both as babies? thanks again!

Just as normal black ratsnakes can vary from region to region somewhat, so will the amelanistic versions of those. Some black rats have more red pigment than others, it is just that the black pigment is such that you can't see the underlying red in normal specimens.

There are two incompatible strains of amelanism in black ratsnakes. This means that you could potentially buy two different albino black ratsnakes from different parents, breed them, and get all normal-coloured babies heterozygous for each gene. It's how I got two very pretty black black ratsnakes There may have been a time when you could differentiate them by sight (i.e. what people love slapping T+ and T- all over)but they may be pretty thoroughly mixed up by people who don't know that the strains are different. It's occurred in a couple of other snake species as well (i.e. Cal Kings)
