what kind?

Looks like a mud, maybe an eastern mud. Does the plastron have a hinge? Is the plastron oval or more of a "t"? Muds have a hinge and a full plastron, musks do not. Try going to www.chelonia.org for pictures of both.

musk turtles only have two chin barbles, unlike that pic with many. The redish color also is often seen in musks. I'd go with mud, but I can't be more specific with what type.

If I had to make a guess, I would say Big Bend Mud Turtle (Kinosternon hirtipes murrayi).
