New corn snake

tcarter Jul 11, 2005 10:21 AM

Hello everyone. I am a long time keeper of Boas and Monitor lizards, and I decided to take the plunge and get a corn snake. I ordered a normal baby female from Ray's Reptilia (who I highly recommend)and got her last week.
She's a fiesty little bugger, hissing and striking until you leave her alone. I have read that this behavior will eventually subside and she will calm down. My question is, should I be trying to handle her right now, or should I keep it to a minimum? I don't want to stress the little girl out, but I have found that regular handling with Boas when they are young helps to build trust.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

It's actually very crucial that you leave her alone for a while to settle in and become comfortable in her new surroundings. Don't bother her at all for at least a week after getting her except to check her water. After a week of this, you can start handling her for short periods (5-10 minutes) everyday and build up to longer and/or more frequent handling as she becomes more comfortable.
