In memoriam of Archimedes Harris

purduecg Jul 11, 2005 10:28 AM

I had to put down Archimedes on Friday morning. The infection had crossed into his pelvic cavity, and was eating away at his spine, which according to the vet would be nearly unbearably painful for him. Additionally he was no longer able to to have significant bowel movements, in addition to atrophy that was becomning extensive in his good leg, most likely due to lack of nerve activity coming through the infection in his spine.

It was an awful decision to make, but my vet, who is phenomenal, said that it was truly the best one for Archimedes. Thank goodness for X-Rays, so that I could see for myself the devestation that had been rendered on his poor body. Even at the very end, the vet commented on what a beautiful Uromastyx he was, which in a way made it even harder.

Archimedes was buried in our family "pet cemetary" in WI, Friday evening. I keep thinking I am over the worst of the loss, but then I find myself on the very edge of tears *again* as I write this.

Archie was a very special lizard, who enjoyed freaking parents out (he used to sit on my shoulder while I organized the parking of cars on our lawn during football games while in college), watching TV, sleeping under working subwoofers and befriending crickets (though almost never eating them). He is survived by his "brother" Mosca, myself, and various other animal and human family members.

His loss has left an enormous gap in my heart, but may he once again be happy, painfree, and enjoying newfound freedom in his special place in heaven.

With sadness,
Elizabeth

You did everything you could. I'm sure Archie could not have asked for a better owner to love him and care for him. May he rest in peace.

Elizabeth-

I'm so very sorry to hear about Archie. You were so good to him and gave him the best care possible. Rest easier knowing you did everything you could to help him when he was sick, and though it's heartbreaking, you made the right decision when the time came. Archie was one of the first uros on this board that I recognized when I first came here. Your vet wasn't wrong - Archie was beautiful. My thoughts are with both of you.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. You were the best uro mom he could have had and did everything you could to save him. You made the ultimate sacrifice for his welfare by letting him go. He has crossed the rainbow bridge and is now free of all pain. My thoughts are with you...

I always commented how COOL looking he was, just so very SAD!

I have GREAT empathy for you and understand your pain. Hope you feel happier real soon!

He's all brand new now, healed, and running around eating lots of veggies and basking in the warm sunshine, as he tells all the other animals how wonderful YOU are

Take care,

That's terrible and I'm sorry about that. That must have been hard on you, but I'm sure he's no longer having problems moving about.

I have to say, sleeping under working subwoofers!?!?
That would have been a funny sight.

Yes, one would assume he would AVOID such places, but whenever he was out wandering around while I was watching a movie he would always end up under the subwoofer. Weird lizard.

So sorry.
You did all that you could. As did your vet.
The care you have given him would have never occured in nature. The net result may have been the same but the chances that we as humans can give wildlife certainly helps to balance the habitat destruction we do to the developing world.
I am sure you have inspired other hobbists/ breeders to exhaust as many options as we can in helping the pets that we take responsibilty for.
It inspired me. That I know.
I am sorry for your loss of your treasured pet Archie.
Ed

Look forward to the development of your new egyptian baby, who I hope, will help with your loss.

as, which in a way made it even harder.
