Ball Newbie "hides in a corner"

l_l3lackwolf_l Jul 11, 2005 04:08 PM

hey peeps
I just got my first ball a week ago, he´s a 2 month baby, normal pattern, in a 50x50x50 temporary tank, wid chipped coconut as substrate, 2 hides (hot side and cold side), 2 strong branches, 2 artificial bushes behind the caves (hides), a big enough for body water dish.
Now heres the doubt: I have read that balls need hot temps from around 30ºC in hot and 25ºC in cold. The tank has a heat matt under one end of it, but i dont switch it on since in Spain its hot already in summer, and the whole cage is between 25-30ºC.He just ate his first mouse in this house, and im afraid to turn the heat matt on for digestion in case the cage gets overheated:-S Any suggestions would sure get me of this brain whacking doubt:P If this question was already answered previously, i apologize but im a bit lazy to scroll through all the posts
Cheers,
Sheri

Congrats on your new ball - they are great and I'm sure you'll have a great time with him! If my conversion calculations are correct your set up is running at about 86 degrees F without the mat which is ok and you probably don't need to have the heat mat on during the day at that temperature - but later at night depending on how cold it gets you might want to put it on for a while but not too long if I'm correct in assuming 50 x 50 means centimeters then you're cage will heat up qhite fast. Your heat mat would work the best (and you can stop worrying) if you can hook it up to a rheostat or thermostat that way it will shut off before getting too hot. Hope this helps!
