Adding A New Female in with Proven Breeders? Help

palex134 Jul 11, 2005 05:27 PM

I want to add my favorite female in with 1.1 proven breeders. They are a bit bigger than she is. Will they attack her? How should I do this safley?

Toss her in. Monitor her weight and appearance pretty closely afterwards to be sure the other female isn't dominating her. Otherwise, things should be just fine. We've had up to four or five females with one male, and nearly all were added at different times, without any issues.

So far I've seen dominance with groups comprised only of females, but never displays of abuse in a breeding group. I'm sure it happens, but it hasn't happened yet with any our groups.

I've never had much trouble intoducing new females to an established group BUT I have 1. made sure they were of comparable size and 2. always introduced them all into a new enclosure so all were on equal footing, so to speak. The one time I intoduced a female into an enclosure with an established female (but no male), the new one got bitten, harrassed and chased around although no real harm was done. I did remove her however just to make sure that she didn't drop her tail. Cresties seem to be a lot more amiable about newcomers than some gecko species.

You should not have problems introducing her but I would wait until she is a comparable weight and size to the others. Also if you want to be extra cautious you could re-arrange the tank and reintroduce the entire lot to it. This is over kill as most times you can introduce a new girl with no trouble -- but another option if you feel better. Just don't introduce her if she is considerably smaller than the other girls.
