Using Aspen bedding for substrate...

chrysemys Jul 11, 2005 07:29 PM

I have been using papertowels for about a year now and would like to start using something a bit more pleasing to the eye. I was just wondering if anyone has used aspen bedding before. I was thinking about giving it a try. What do you think?
Thanks,
Chris

If you want something pleasing to the eye, try sifted, washed play sand. Aspen bedding holds a lot of moisture which is not good for a beardie. And with moisture you get a lot of bacteria. But i have heard of people mixing play sand with aspen bedding and it creates a substrate that is more like what bearded dragons live on in the wild. But your beardie wouldnt know the difference. Of course with this mixture the majority of it would be sand and a small part aspen bedding

I use oats. If it's injested it won't hurt them because it's a vegatable grain product. The only thing you need to be careful of is when misting your dragon not to SOAK the oats or they will mold. I have a peice of shelf liner under his basking rocks so when I mist him it hits the little peice of liner instead of the oats.

Will the oats expand in the stomach if the ingest it or do you know?

Nope. It's a vegatable grain product. It's completely safe for him. He likes to dig in it to. My vet suggested it to me.

When you say oats... Do you mean like Quaker Oats?
