This is a snake that is in classifieds right now. What could this possibly be a birth defect or some kind of strange cross, but isn't there only 2 snake species that is scalless. It is suppose to be a 4yr old female ,the only scalless gopher in the world.John

yes, that's an amazing animal! I have read about other scaleless in books. It is an extremely rare mutation in reptiles...actually, don't believe I know of any non-snake examples. If you are into fish, there are scaleless varieties of koi.

Actually, a local non-internet breeder has a scaleless Pantherophis which is amazing, so maybe there are more out there than you think.

Pics don't do scaleless snakes justice!

There was a topic about a ball python like this over in there forum about a month ago. Very divided about whether or not this kind of mutation should be tried to proved out or not.

I remember that snake was posted here on this forum about 4 years ago and didn't get a warm reception . People refurred to as a weak reject freak. I personly dont have any problems with it but I myself wouldn't care own it either .
The best thing about it was the price $25.000 WOW

Yes this is a weird one just didn't know if something like that is a genetic defect or what, and yeah I loved that price tag.I personally could not afford that and would be to afraid that it would be to subseptable to ailments.John.

The first scaleless snake I ever heard of was a northern water snake. The snake was owned by Eric Thiss of Zoobooksales. He recently told me that that snake never bred, perhaps because she did not smell right to the males. The boys definitely ignored her. It seems the chin scales have scent producing glands of some sort.

In the end she gave birth to a bunch of slugs and a few normal male babies. A virgin birth. Then she apparently died.

Regarding the chin scale thingy: At IHS Phoenix last month we watched video of a h20 moccasin scent marking his favorite hunting spot. He rubbed his chin repeatedly on a small twig sticking up from the stream bottom. He also caught three fish that evening at this location! Awesome nightvision footage. Phil Andreadis rocks!
