rainbow boa as first snake?

Gpoop Jul 11, 2005 09:33 PM

Would a rainbow boa make a good first snake? They don't get too big for me and they look really cool. I think I could handle one if they aren't nippy. I have a redfoot tortoise so I know how to keep humidity up. I also have a russian and a bearded dragon. Just let me know. I'm still looking at my options. So are most of them nippy? I see from the picture gallery people holding them and I saw a child holding one aswell, so let me know if they would make a good beginner snake. Thanks

Gpoop,
....Is a Rainbow Boa a good first snake? It depends upon you much more than it does upon the snake. Rainbow Boas are great first snakes for people who are willing to do lots of research and learn about housing and keeping them. The information is available about how to keep these snakes healthy in captivity but many people do not pay close enough attention to the important small details and have poor luck keeping this species. If you are very detail oriented a Rainbow Boa can be the right snake for you.
....Do they bite? Yes, recently imported ones and untamed baby ones often bite. Most good breeders tame their babies before they sell them. If you handle a tamed one properly and with confidence it will likely not bite you. If you are very afraid of being bitten you probably will not be able to handle the snake with enough confidence and it will eventually bite you. Stupid feeding errors do occur. These snakes have big appetites and can mistakenly bite the hand that feeds them if you are not careful. IMO the bite of a Rainbow Boa that is less than 4 feet long is relatively painless and nothing to worry about.
