Corn snake, everted hemipene, please help

buffysmom Jul 11, 2005 09:52 PM

I have a hatchling, which emerged around noon today looking OK, although his skin is a bit "loose" fitting (none of his sibs have wrinkles in their skin). He's smaller than the others as well.
The most pressing problem, however, is that a few hours after hatching one of his hemipenes started sticking out. I've applied some KY jelly to keep it moist & am misting his shoebox to keep humidity up. Is there anything else I can do to help fix this, likely uncomfortable, problem?

Poor doing hatchlings are often the hardest problems keepers face. You are doing good with keeping the hemipene moist. If you would like to try, you can often coax it back in with a moist Q-tip. I will likely pop out again later though. My best suggestion for this hatchling is a vet trip to assess overall condition, hydration, and the prolapse. THe prognosis sounds poor, but a veterinarian will be able to define this a bit more after examining it.

Good luck,
Ian

ps, I like the names in your animal list

Thank you so much for responding & for the compliment on names. I checked on him today & his skin looks a better fit. Overall he looks better. When I checked on the hemipene, I was sad to note it still out & when I went to treat it, felt really stupid when he peed on me from several centimeters down! It's his cord, not a hemipene. :0 I have another one with that, but the cloaca was so easy to notice on that one, that I knew what it was. I can't believe I missed it on this one!
Thanks again for the help, though, as I can keep it in mind in case this really does happen in the future.
