How do you sterilize a huge piece of driftwood?

arspinky Jul 12, 2005 01:34 AM

Hi all,

I just got a huge (33" x10" x 7" ) piece of driftwood, and want to clean and sterilize it for my beardie tank. I checked a few sites ,and they each recommended different ways. It's too huge to boil in pot, so I was wondering if I hose it down good with fresh water, than put it in the bathtub to soak in bleach/water solution (what concentration?) for 24 hours, then hose it off and soak in a fresh water bath for several days (changing the water completely daily with fresh water) , then let it dry for several days, would that kill off all the bugs, bacteria, etc... so it would be safe in my beardie tank?
It wont fit in my oven, so I can't bake it.

Thanks for any advice.

Bleaching it like you said would be just fine. Just make sure you rinse and soak it well afterwards. A good way to tell that you got the bleach off is if it dosnt smell like bleach anymore.

I use to have a collection of Leopard Geckos that I bred, but have sold them.

Thanks John,

I got a nice surprise when he started getting yellow, as I got him as a normal at a discount because he is missing a rear foot.
The bigger he gets, the more yellow he is becoming.
He has a nice temperment too.
