Het Pied. Genetic Marker

InletExotics Jul 12, 2005 01:40 AM

Is the genetic marker for het. pieds 100%? I have seen some pictures of ones that people say have it but the ones I purchased do not. They were sold to me as 100% hets. but lack the straight lines going down the sides of the belly.

Now, I am also wondering if it 100% because I see some het pieds as 50% and 66% hets and if the marker is 100% sure how can these still be sold as even possible hets. Thanks for your expert help.

Sincerely,
Jeremy

No, from the reports I've read it is not 100%. There seems to be a pretty good consensus that some hets don't have it. If you got yours from a reliable source (check the site we can't link here) no need to worry.

There are even some people who appear to believe there is nothing to it at all. It seems way too common in hets to me for there not to be something going on. I think it just really bothers some people that it isn't 100%.

Yes some 100% hets have the belly stipes down the edge....but SOME DO NOT. I am hatching 20 100% hets this season. All sired from my Homo male. some have these belly features some do not. If you purchased a het from someone you trust....forget the marker....it's a het.

When I finish hatching all the hets this season I plan to post the results.....# of markers vs. non-markers.

It is like this, Some breeders use the DOUBLE LINES and a MARKER for picking babies from POSS HET clutches, NOTE : NOT ALL 100% Het PIEDs have these Double line MARKERs, Basically when looking through POSS HET PIEDS you would choose the ones with the DOUBLE LINE to MAYBE increase your chance of actually getting a 100% het pied from a Poss HET CLUTCH, Because we know that when you breed a 100% het pied to a NORMal about 1/2 of the Babies will actually be 100% and the other half will be Normal, the problem is THEY all look Normal so You wouldn't know which ones were really 100% hets so I personally Use the Double line theory when choosing my breeders. I have also found several of the AFRICAN Captive hatched babies have the double lines as well, So you need to watch out for SCAMS, Basically make SURE the PERSON you are dealing with is on the Up and UP. I know it is a LONG shot but I am currently raising some of the DOUBLE LINE African baby females to breed to a pied...Just to see. I personally have 100% het pieds with the MARKERS and without. Hope this helps. Thanks David

Genetic markers are real indicators but they arent 100%. This year I`ve hatched out 14 hets from from my male pied to 3 different females and all 14 have the same genetic marker. I know for a fact though that some 100% het pieds wont carry these markers. So, basically its nice to have but not essential. I have 7 more eggs incubating from pied to normal, it`ll be interesting to see if they`ll carry the same markers as the first 3 clutches have. Best wishes, Mark Petros BallPython777.com

No, it's not a sure thing. I have a het pied from Ralph Davis that does not have the belly markings. Christy
