the things we do for snakes...

Well yesterday evening in the interest of better health, and regardless of the 110 degree heat, I took my trusty mtn bike out for a sunset ride through the canyon by my house. As I was coming back down the bike path I was STUNNED to see a speckled rattler lying out in front of me (never seen a snake in 4 years in this area)not to mention it was about a million degrees outside still. Well he saw me at the same time, and started hoofing it across the path towards a clump of opuntia, unfortunately this brought him directly in line with my front tire, well the ensuing wreck was quite spectacular! I went flying over my handlebars to land squarely in a small mesquite tree, the bike then landed on top of me, after untangling myself from the tree and my bike, I stood up to find that Mr. Speck had evaporated. I had almost chalked it up to a mirage when a pretty jogger lady told me she saw the whole thing and was quite impressed with my acrobatics, and concern over a venomous reptile. She thought I would have just ran it over instead of wrecking my bike in such a grand fashion, and I told her that if it had been anything else I probably would have.
Results: Scuffed knees, mashed wrist, scratched bike, one lucky speckled rattler!LOL.

It was about 3 yrs ago. I was skateboarding at UCSD w/ a bunch of friends. I was skating down a hill on a smooth black top surface(in between a big patch of oak trees and debris) which heads towards a food court area. From about 12 ft. away around a corner I noticed a lrg. snake laying in the center of the path. I was first in line of 4 skaters so it was crazy. I ollied (jumped w/ the skateboard)over the snake as if i jumped off my board I would have for sure fell and or my board would have hit the snake. Anyway it was just easier to jump over it. After that I stopped and grabbed the snake about 10 seconds before the next skater came around the corner. It was hilarious to see the look on his face when I was holding a 3 1/2 ft. gopher snake in one hand a skateboard in the other. Not that close of a call but still fun to herp and skate at the same time. By the way, nice save on the speck lat. rootsrok

Ya know Lat...to an agile raquetball player who has run over his own stupid bird dogs w/ a motorcycle....I think you're a klutz. The good newz if there is any...is that the klutz's often look longer, & harder....& thats when the insights & understanding ...of course begin....
