Can A Radiant Heating Panel Be Affixed On The Glass Ceiling Of An All Glass Terrarium?

Daniele Jul 12, 2005 04:44 PM

I was wondering how much heat the radiant heating panel produces... It will be hooked up to a quality thermostat, and the temperature will be set at 86°. A couple of silicon beads would secure the panel if the heat wasn't excessive. Thanks for any input!

If it is an all glass enclosure, why not just affix it underneath the enclosure???? That would give you more heating for th e entire enclosure. Heat rises, so on the ceiling, it wouldnt heat to its full capacity. Seems like you would lose more heating capabillity by mounting it on the top. Thats why they are called UTH's.

Are we talking heat panels like Pro-Products, Enerjoy or Helix? Or are we talking those Big Apple glorified heat pads? I'll assume the former.

Heat panels aren't UTHs. Heat panels are meant to be fixed to the inside ceiling of the cage and radiate heat downward. They have reflective insulation behind the heating element to radiate the heat from the surface of the panel.

To answer the original question, NO. Don't put it on top of glass. Very dangerous to do so. You mount them inside the cage on the ceiling.

Good luck.

Yes a UTH is an Undertank Heater, but the question states using a ""Radiant"" heat panel, which is a totally different kind of heater than a stick on under the tank heat pad. The radiant panels "radiate" the heat much more like the sun's own energy, and should be mounted at the top of the enclosure in order to "radiate" the heat. Some feel that this is a much more natural heat setup over using belly heat (UTH) as it mimics the natural warmth of the sun.

Personally I've never used them as they are rather expensive as compared to the UTH heat pads so I really couldn't answer the original question as to how hot they get on the mounting side and if it would be bad for the glass.

Try posting this question over in the cage and housing forums and I'm sure that someone has or is doing exactly what you are looking to do with yours.

Best of luck,

Colubrid-aphilia..

The radiant heating panel is one made by Boaphile Plastics. It's mounted on eother the wall or ceiling of the terrarium. I was just wondering if silicone would be a good way to affix it since the surface is glass, thus not making it possibile to use brackets.

I'll have an UTH heater (heating pad) as well, and both will be hooked up to a Herp Power thermostat.

Thanks!

burmaboy Jul 13, 2005 02:03 AM

A couple beads of siliconecwill not hold an rhp to a glass enclosure top.You say you thermostat will be set to 86*, but that is air temp...not panel temp.
I use 120watt Pro Products panels, and hitting them with a temp gun, I get readings, on the panel of around 130*.Is your entire enclosure glass?
If you can, change to a screen top, and bolt directly through.
Silicone will hod the panel for about 5 minutes, then fall and end up baking your snake.

ginebig Jul 13, 2005 10:34 AM

Or better yet, build a wood top to bolt it to. Cut a small hole in the other end, and cover it with screen for ventilation.

Quig

P.S. It does't have to be pretty just funtcional, pretty can come later

Daniele Jul 13, 2005 01:13 PM

Thanks burmaboy and sneakypete...! I'll have to find a better way to hold the RHP in place; don't want any mishaps!

Daniele Jul 13, 2005 02:15 PM

As I'm "stuck" with a custom made all glass terrarium especially made for snakes, I have no choice but to affix the radiant heat panel with some sort of adhesive. This will work--good for continuous adhesion at 450°...

burmaboy Jul 13, 2005 04:26 PM

Even though the final choice is yours,I would'nt do the adhesive thing. You're supporting the weight straught down, where this adhesive you've shown is really a sealer...not for supporting weight.
Final hint...bring your top, and panel to a local glass shop...let them drill it though, and secure the panel properly.
Assuming it's not tempered glass, you'll avoid heartbreak.

Daniele Jul 13, 2005 11:58 PM

Thanks, burmaboy.

That's an option that I though about; I was concerned about breaking the glass, as I bored into aquariums in the past with hand drills with disastrous results! If a drill press with the glass boring bit and oil were used, breakage could probably be avoided. I feel the silicone option would be easier, and better aesthetically.

If the surface of a 9" X 11" plywood board with a hook was covered with the silicone rubber, and affixed to a clean cement ceiling, you could just about hang a heavy bag on it! I don't think that supporting a 1 pound (?) weight in an aquarium would pose any problem... I use silicone rubberfor lots of support uses, and it's strong.

Ahhh, I misunderstood the question! Sorry about that, and as far as a a radiant heater, I dont have the slightest idea as to how you would mount it on the ceiling of an all glass enclosure.
Good luck with it and keep us posted.
