Anyone have leucistic snappers?

HerperHelmz Jul 12, 2005 04:59 PM

Does anyone in these forums have a TRUE leucistic ally snapper?

Pink Snappers are not leucistic, and calling them such is wrong. A leucistic animal is all white, with blue or black eyes.

It's best to labels certain animals as they should be, and I see alot of posts with people calling a turtle that is pink, leucistic.

i guess what we need to start calling them is the "golden or yellow phase" right? i've seen pics of albino common snappers, but no albino alli-snappers. i think most people here know what your talking about when you say leucistic or pinkskin though.a roadside park in jennings,la. has a pure white alli-snapper with black eyes displayed. they said it was normal colored when they first got it. so you really call it a true leucistic either can you?

I think I know which animal you are referring to. Makes me think there was something wrong with the water for it go through such a dramastic color change. Or that it is a hypomelanistic specimen.

I agree with Steve H.

I'm not saying a pink one is a leucy, but heres something to think about. A lot of leucistic animals are pink early in life. Because of see through skin (thin white skin) they appear pink. Just a thought.

HerperHelmz Jul 13, 2005 02:35 PM

Alot of neonate animals that are leucistic are pink, and in the ally snappers the "leucistics" as alot of people call them, are pink. But if they were true leucistics, they would turn completely white as they grew, which they don't do, instead they turn a yellowish or brown color.

Because of the pinkish color, I would think the morph is erythristic, which means excessive red pigment. But because the morph turns yellowish as they grow, I would think they were hypomelanistic.

here is a pic of my alligator snapper. i bought him as a hypo from a hamburg show about a year ago. im not sure if he is really hypo, pinkskin, or leucistic. but whatever you want to call him, he is a neat looking turtle with a very aggressive attitude. let me know what you guys think of him.

lol, neat photo. He's got quite the attitude on him huh.

He is what most people call pink skin.

Hypo fits it better in my opinion. But either one is true.

You have a great turtle. I think that it will ever get lighter in color as he get older. What color is his plastron shell. Really a gem of a turtle. I don't think that it matters what you call you turtle, just know that you can be called lucky that you have it.

Kurma Jul 22, 2005 11:06 AM

How much did that turtle cost you and who was the seller?

SteveH Jul 12, 2005 11:09 PM

@ bobmcloughlin...
I sent you a message, but that was before I saw your post in this thread... sorry if it's redundant.
I have two more questions for you...
Do you have any details on the hamburg show, and is it a travelling reptile show kinda deal?
Also... How much did you pay for your turtle???

Thanks!

CJ
