I'm looking to get a Collared Lizard, question about a species

12JC21 Jul 12, 2005 11:43 PM

(Excuse me.. for I am just getting into the reptile scene.. and I'm addicted.)

I work at a pet store, and we have some collared lizards. I've been reading up on lizards, and so far I've decided I want to start with collareds. They are labeled as Desert Collared Lizards. What species does this fall under? Also, we have a pair, male and female, I am experienced to where I'm sure I could handle housing and caring for both, but I'm not positive about the offspring. Should I Get the pair or just one? (Which sex?)

I know it turned into more than one question.. lol, sorry! Thanks in advance!

You made a very COOL decision, they make nice pets , and become pretty friendly if handled often.

I also would say if they are there together, than get them both don't leave the one behind LOL
Thats up to you of course , I'm teasing, but why not get both.

You will only wish you did once you see how cute the one is anyway

By the time they breed you can learn all the ins and outs of egg laying and such.
People here are more than willing as you can see, to help if you need it.

Nice to have you, let us know when ya get your new buddies.
Oh and Vonnie called me the collared Queen only because I LOVE them. But never believe anyone has ALL the answers, hahahah I sure do not.

As sweet as she was to say that, I wish I did, we would have HEALTHY lizards forever, but unfortunitly things are constantly changing and WE all have to KEEP LEARNING !

Enjoy

It is just my opinion that no animal should live all alone. I often see wild lizards sunning in pairs. My dog revels in human company, my lizards have learned to tolerate me. (And perhaps realize that I am who feeds them!)
If you don't want babies, you do not have to incubate any eggs that come your way. Should you sucessfully hatch them out, you would have to keep hatchlings about 2 months and perhaps be willing to ship them to new homes. It is against forum rules to discuss purchases, sales, trades or gifts, but it is ok to post baby pictures and wait to see what emails come your way. You could ask forum breeders of C. bicinctores what their sales are like before you decide.
I'm glad you found Eve's page, so you have access to the FAQs in case you have any questions on their care. Can you post a photograph of the lizards if you want an opinion on their species? "Desert" is too vague a description for us to tell. Welcome and I hope you enjoy them.
