regalringneck Jul 12, 2005 11:50 PM

oh well....

Regalis were copulating in May....

...oh wow...regalis eggs....there was no maternal wrap of them & the clutch size seems low for a 28-30" heavily fed queen....????

Pity the flash on my [PoS] Sony Mavica.....nuk't them

....it is yet another unknown what happens when these 2 spps meet in nature...lyres I have from a reliable source are purportedly ophiophagous, tho I have never tested this, nor seen reference to it in the lit. Being constrictors & opisthoglyphs....their roles as predator-prey might be reversed?
In the analagous case of Hypsiglena, their is no attempt to use either constriction nor their venom to thwart regalis.... thus I will need to examine Trimorphs at some pt. in time, but probably not w/ my finest queen....

Speaking of Lats...whats the furthust down the desert side of the coastal ranges that you've found them?

lateralis Jul 15, 2005 11:48 AM

I have only found 2 in the past 29 years, I suspect this is mostly due to the lack of time spent in the right habitat. Eimon I believe, has found them down towards Borrego and San Diego area though Im not sure how close to the coast they go or where he found his. Your query demands experimentation and I believe the next time Im out I will test this by bringing home an unfortunate to feed the little devil. My lyre has an unusual coloration which I thought might darken as it got older, so far its staying VERY pale, an unusual morph? Its a pretty little snake and I am grateful it is taking to captive life so well.
Cheers
