F1 or wild caught?

westtexas Jul 13, 2005 02:17 AM

not quite sure how to word this, but if a wild caught female is gravid, are the offspring from that snake considered F1 snakes or wild caught? technically the eggs (future offspring) were in the wild when taken, but physically when the eggs hatch they are not in the wild (thus F1?). thx.

i think its "CAPTIVE-HATCHED" as opposed to "CAPTIVE-BRED".........

I was always under the impression that to be F1 you had to take a captive hatched baby and raise it to breed. I also thought that the F1 refered to captive bred generations. I believe in that instance it matters from where the first egg came from. The important issue is to be able to follow the lineage. You cannot do that using a already gravid wild caught snake that lays eggs. As you mentioned the female was bred in the wild.

Someone correct me if I am on the wrong track.

F levels refer to the number of generations derived from the wild founder stock, therefore a wild mating and offspring represents the founding generation.

i thought F1 refers to the offsping of a wild caught pair. thus the offspring of the F1 would not be F1 too. so the offsping in my original question would be... (thank you).

Wild individuals or offspring from a wild occuring mating are founders. Offspring from a non-related pair from a captive mating are F1. Offspring from a sibling pair mating are F2, 2nd generation offspring from those would be F3 and so on... Does this help clarify it for you?

I would call them wild caught since you collected a gravid female. There was nothing to do with captive breeding so according to Bob they can't be F1's. As long as you never introduced it to a captive male since you've had her. If however, she was ovulating when found and you brought her home and put her with a male that could of bred her without you observing copulation, well then you'll never know if she was gravid when found or just swelled up from ovulation. Just my 2 cents. Either way, congrats on quadrupling, quintrupling etc. your alterna numbers. I never got so lucky. BA
