Tumors????

Nicodemus Jul 13, 2005 08:59 AM

I was always under the impression that only mammals could get tumors. However, my toad has recently developed a lump and an open sore that looks like a metastisized tumor (alot like what you'd see on an old mouse).

I try not to handle my amphibians for the obvious reasons, so it looks like I missed this one bigtime.

I thought it might have been a cut that was infected, and started treating for that, but it seems almost to be OUTSIDE the skin.

Some sort of parasite maybe?

Any help would be appreciated...

Im sorry I read this a little late. I have had a few toads over the past few years that have developed wierd lumps and bumps. I took all of them to the herp vet and even bought an amphibian medicine book to try and help them at the vet clinic i work for. I have treated them all with great medications and unfortunatley i lost each one. The lumps always turned out to be some sort of tumor not a parasite. The frogs never showed any sign of illness to warn me ahead of time. Upon necropsy most of them would have liver masses as well. It seems the chance of tumors and cancer in amphibians is higher than most people realize.

I hope your others stay healthy
