Are Chondro's Friendly?

amoeba14 Jul 13, 2005 01:07 PM

Hello, I am very interested in purchasing my first chondro but have heard mixed reviews as to how friendly they can be. Does it depend on the area the animal origionally came from? Do any of you handle your chondro? Anyone been biten? Any info is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim Savard

I think if you have experience with other snakes, you can judge a chondro. Some will be VERY mean, others will be almost plesant, with a lot running the spectrum between. I'm no expert, but I think most Chondros will be Ok to handle during the day, after you pick them up.
I use a hook to get mine out of the cage during the day, and of the 8 I have, 7 will be fine after that (as long as I don't bump them in the snout or make sudden moves, blow in their face, or do other stupid things, etc). There is one that I never trust not to bite me anywhere, anytime.
I have one small female (approx. 18 months) who I swear enjoys being handled...go figure.
If i were looking for an animal to handle/keep as a semi-pet I would Find a purchase option where you can see and hold the snake. Also make sure the temp. is adequate. If it is cool (mid to low 70's like at a expo or convention) then the animal might be mellow no matter what)

Thanks for the info. I have a corn and a ball and am learning everything i can about various species. Chondros really catch my eye but want to make sure I'm not over my head.

Thanks again,

Tim

Just understand their husbandry needs and you will be fine.

Buying from 2 calm parents (from a breeder, mind you) will also help insure that your chondro is calm.

GTPs are not really a handling kind of snake. I have a couple I handle now and then but most are just there to look at. If your looking for a snake that can be handled a lot you might want to look for something other than tree snakes. Randy

Really depends on the individual animal. And even "friendly" chondros can try to kill you once the sun goes down.

A lot of it depends on the individual snake's personality, imho. I have two: an older OS male that is a docile sweetheart, and an 03 GM female that hates being handled. She's not mean, but whenever you touch her she freaks and does everything she can to get away from you.
