I've gotten my D. melanogaster from Saurian along with the culture kits, and believe I obtained my D. hydeii and springtails from Ed's Fly Meat.

Your best bet is to find a supply close you that you can use. Shipping fruit flies can be quite expensive. If you can't find a source near you, then the ones recommened before are top quality.

On the other hand, you only have to ship fruit flies once for the initial culture. I do agree however, that ordering more media costs more for shipping than the media itself. I've just been too lazy to do my own when what I purchase works so well. I did try it myself for awhile, in sterilized jam jars with fruit fly media cooking recipes of various sorts. I made some stinky messes before deciding that I hadn't retired from a demanding job I'd held for 55 years while raising and cooking for a family just to collect my retirement funds and cook for a bunch of fruit flies.

Patty, I can't believe you BUY cultures for that many flies!!!

I use to clean cups (and might go back to cleaning now that I have a dishwasher), but I just use disposible cups and lids. They are cheap and so is the media.

I didn't mean I buy the fruit flies in individual cultures. I still have the off-spring of the original fruit flies I purchased 5 or more years ago and haven't replaced them. I couldn't afford to buy individual cultures for that many frogs, of course. I buy the culture media rather than make it myself, and like you, use disposable plastic deli cups. Recycling depends upon the condition of the cups and lids. What I meant was that I no longer struggle with making my own media and using Mason jars, etc. when Saurian's culture KITS (excluding flies) are so easy and reliable-- and partly recyclable.
