Hey Keith

How much more does that female have to grow to be able to breed? She's almost similar in girth with my adult cali kings.

She eats like a monster, and the only adult king I have that will actually chase their food, the rest are just lazy. She took 3 hoppers tonight, probably would've taken more.

I just can't help myself.

Snakes do not get or become lazy. They are only what their conditions allow.

Kingsnakes, heck all snakes, eat like pigs, when conditions are right. If they don't then thats a direct responce to conditions. Not a responce to being lazy. I imagine the possibility of there being a real truely lazy snake exsists, althought I have never seen one, the chance of having several or many is indeed rare.

I know, this is not what you asked, and I am sorry for that, but I thought this would be understood by now.

If your snakes are healthy(and I am sure they are) if you would allow a wider range of temps to choose from, they would without question, eat anything close to what resembles food.

If they are sick, then that may be reason for lazy snakes.

I hope I am totally off, so could you explain what a lazy snake is, and what are its choices? Thanks FR

FR, I appreciate the correspondence(speaking of which, didn't you get that email I sent you about 2 weeks ago lol?). But when I said 'lazy' I was joking.

If lazy = reluctant feeders, then the post is still the same.

If your e-mail was about a locality of snake, I do not give out localities any more. I did for years and years, even to science, all that came of that was reptiles suffering. So I stopped. No good ever came of it. This was explained to me by Roger Conant, when I offered a undiscribed species to him, he suggested it was better off unknown.

Just think about it, you would be just one more predator for snakes that are running out of places to hide. Good luck, FR

Frank, always enjoy your earnest responses. After rereading your post, I realize that what you said is true, therefore, I always feel "privileged" to find a snake in the wild and to help protect its exact location. I love to collect a few, but maintain only as many as I feel I can properly provide for, and am glad to learn about their health and husbandry on these forums. Keep up the tutorials!

Gald to hear she is settling in nicely Mike. I personally I like to wait until 40" to breed. I know some go by a combo of weight and size but if a snake is 40" long is plenty fat enough to breed. I did breed a 37" NJ female this year and she laid 7 beautiful eggs so maybe 36-40" would be a better average. Yeah she is an aggressive feeder for sure as most of mine are. Sometimes I just cant get my hand out of there fast enough ! lol Good luck with her.

Keith

p.s. These sizes are for Floridana and Easterns not the smaller subs.

Yeah she almost tagged me a couple times lol.

How is she like handling her when it isn't feeding time? She seems kind of jumpy.

She is fine in hand maybe a little skittish but not more so than normal. She is still probably stressed out a little.
