Confused on humidity

casesilva Jul 14, 2005 08:54 AM

Hi,
I have a Saharan Uro and have had mali's in the past, all of which I have had on playsand with rock caves and haven't had a problem. I bought this reptile magazine which had a nice article written by Lindsay Pike. I know that he is one of the best uro breeders and in his article it states that he uses a tupperware box with some moist substrate in it so the uro can burrow. I thought any kind of moisture in the cage would bring on respiratory infections or is this only if the whole cage had moist substrate in it? Thanks

Casey

Hi Casey, my chuckwalla buddy, hehehehehe !

Lindsay is a great guy, and knows his uros as I have always learned it is a good thing to have where they sleep more humid, (But just their den) this is very beneficial in helping with shedding also.

Think about when you dig down, the top layers are usually quite dry but as you continue to dig, the soil feels more damp and cool as ya go. So in narure when they dig their dens, I'm sure it's the same way!

The rest of their enclosure is not humid/ damp and keeping a water bowl in there is not recommended
** UNLESS it's a baby or very young uro, or very skinny uro that needs hydrating.

Others may have more to say!

Eve,

Thanks for that info. I really never knew that. He did also state to put it in the cool end of the cage. I will be setting that up very soon. I have a very large cage that he will be going into. I will post pics soon!!

How are your chucks doing??

Casey
