Sack or cotton bag, put rat inside, swing against wall as if hitting a home run. Quick, humane.

that sounds....messy to say the least. no "splatter" effect?

Slammin them into something will defineatly cause blood.. Im not sure if it works on rats but with mice I grab around the neck wit BBQ tongs and niether sufficate him or grip his head with the tongs and if you pull back its tail like you give alittle pull to his tail it will snap his spine and cause instant death... This might help or get frozen...

Humane way to kill a rat?? Gas would be the best way if you don't want a mess. I feed live but when I need to feed dead I hit the rodent on a hard surface knocking them out then I feed. I have used a snake hook in the past, put the hook on the back of the rodents neck and push down. Breaks the neck and the rodent is dead.

1: Hold rat by tail

2: Swiftly swing rat so that head and neck contact edge of shelf

3: Insert dead rodent into cage you can even do it quick so that they are still kicking to stimulate a strike.

4: Happy snake

For small rats and mice a cervical dislocation is quick and effective without any mess - pin the head and pull the tail - don't try on larger rats it won't really work.

You can bash it like a lot of people here obviously do - but that is not really clean and if you don't hit it right well you aren't going to kill it - just injure it.

A CO2 chamber would be the best way - or you can use the dry ice method - but since you don't want to gas it there is one other way - they make electronic rat traps that when the rat goes it they get zapped and die I've heard many herpers use these tho I haven't so cant give you first hand expereince.
