Ball python off feed...suggestions? (long)

crazyreptilelady Jul 14, 2005 11:08 AM

I am new to posting at the site but not new to reading posts. I posted in early June about a year old ball that went off feed after feeding every single week for a year. He/she was up to 3 mice once a week. Then nothing. In the past month and a half he has eaten 2 one-mouse meals. He just recently shed. He still has good size and is active. I know he can probably wait a lot longer to eat if he wants. The thing I am concerned about is the fact that he is acting "shy" around them now. He used to be in strike pose moments after placing him in his feed container and several times hit the live mouse before I let go with the tongs or before it hit the floor. Now he seems interested but when the mouse moves around he hides/balls up instead of striking. I talked with my vet and he said that maybe there was some trauma I was unaware (like a bite in the mouth, etc.). I always watch when feeding cause I only have fed live with sucess. I checked his mouth yesterday and it looks healthy and normal with the exception of a bright red line looking what I would imagine a swollen blood vessel might look in an animal that size. The red mark runs from the front of the jaw line back (around where the fangs would lay down in a venomous snake on one side). Any ideas? Should I be worried about this red line? I called my vet and he is out of the office today and will get back to me tomorrow but I wanted to see what you all thought. He never has taken FT or FK. Should I try a hopper to get his "confidence" back up? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks

Hi Jessica,

I don't sense anything abnormal about your ball. My balls act shy/scared or agressive when I put a prey item in their cage but they are not hungry. I know it seems really weird to think of having an animal and it not feeding for maybe months at a time. But, that's how balls are, and while it seems really strange to you it's perfectly normal for them. Relax and enjoy the break from buying rodents .
