What should I use for egg laying bin???

highendreptiles Jul 14, 2005 11:31 AM

I have a female that is pregnant. I have a 65 gallon custom made cage and was wondering what kind of dirt I should use? Is earthgro a good substrate? The female is going to lay her eggs in a week or so, Maybe less.

vermiculate and regular potting soil is fine, just make sure the soil has no added chemicals (ie fertilizer) as these can kill the eggs. Add water to the mix so it packs nicely but doesn't leak water if squeezed. I believe peatmoss can be used as well.

I have a 65 gallon rubbermaid bin and have a mixture of plain potting soil and washed sifted play sand. I put enough water to make it moist, but not muddy. I put a mound on one side and start a hole for her. I then put a spot light on the digging area to heat it up and mist it to keep it moist. I also have a screen lid so she can't climb out. Here is a picture.
