Quick question on Racks and Leos

crazyreptilelady Jul 14, 2005 12:08 PM

Just wanted peoples opinions on using rack systems for Leos. I know they are accepted for Balls by most, but I don't know what the size/space requirement is for geckos and I want a healthy set-up most importantly. If people use racks for geckos, what size and how many geckos per container? As groups or individuals? I am new to leos and I think I am already addicted! Preparing for housing all those cool leos I just can't pass up!

We use the 28 qt. Sterelite containers. We usually have one gecko per container though we do have a pair of fattails in one together and they are getting along fine. We house our babies in 6 qt. sterilites to make it easier for them to catch their food, and we keep them seperate also.

Thanks for the info. So rack heating is good for leos? I know that some people I have read said that belly heat isn't as good for leos as a bulb/ceramic heat emitters. But maybe that is just the opinion of a few? Thanks

I've never had a problem with belly heat. As to which is "best" I have no idea. My geckos seem happy though if that is any indication.

Just wanted to clear up a few things here. Belly heat is what Leopard Gecko's require, they are as you should know terrestrial and also nocturnal. They come out after the sun has gone down, rest on a rock and get heat which is obviously transferred to there belly. So Belly heat is a definite must over heat from lights (above). In my racks i use heat mats, then put a piece of cardboard over the top of the UTH to stop the plastic from melting. My leos seem fine in the rack although my others prefer the bigger more spacious tanks.

The "best method of heating" argument is an old one. Use what works for your cage and habitat needs. BTW, I use halogen lighting for heat/light in my cages...if I measure the temp on the bottom directly under the lights I get a hot spot of low 90's. It also keeps the ambient temps in the cage with the best temp gradient of ANY heating device I have tried (and I have tried many).
